The story of Taigh Ailean
Taigh Ailean (‘Allan’s House’) is named after our family’s great-great-uncle Allan, a respected crofter on Berneray, and our own Allan Turner who began to bring the site back from a ruin over 20 years ago. The cottage retains its original 5-feet-thick stone walls and is roofed using traditional thatching grass from the west side of the island.
We are very attached to the island and retain strong family ties. It’s a special thing to bring new generations to spend time there and see them experience the delights of finding sea creatures on the shoreline, sand-sledging on the dunes or watching otters play at dusk. We know you will experience the same magic we do when you visit.
